Japan resumes whale kill
We should protect them in marine reserves and allow sustainable exploitation in other areas. Agree (0) Alert moderator kelvin: 01 Feb 2008 12:06:12pm Gary as per Rolfe, where do Fin Whales fit into this (overly) simplistic argument? I agree with the concept of sustainable farming whether on land or in water. But give me an example of anything that has been done in our seas for 200 years that is sustainable. 11 of 19 fisheries worldwide have collapsed. The GrandBanks off Newfoundland started their terminal decline over 200 years ago and we now send factory ships all round the world to hoover up what is left. They are even talking about farming Krill now for God's sake! Look at the factory farming of in the North Sea and the Baltic and understand that a large part of the catch is being used as fertiliser - ie caught and ploughed into the land you might just consider that we humans do not even begin to understand the meaning of the word sustainability.Another Statistic: Gloabl fishing industry $85 billion.
Diebold rejects $2.63 billion bid from United Technologies
Diebold Inc. said Monday it rejected United Technologies Corp.'s $2.63 billion buyout offer made public over the weekend because it significantly undervalued the company's potential.'We are confident that executing on our strategy will create substantially greater value for shareholders than UTC's proposal,' said Diebold's non-executive Chairman John Lauer in a statement.United Technologies said late Sunday it had been courting the maker of automated teller machines and electronic security products for two years with no headway, and made public a $40-a-share bid for the company to enlist the help of Diebold shareholders. The bid represents a 66% premium to Diebold's closing price on Friday. If Diebold conducts a due-diligence financial review, United Technologies said it might be prepared to boost the $40 deal price. In Monday's release, Diebold called UTC's offer an opportunistic attempt to buy the company at a time when shareholders don't have enough data to measure its value.
