| Los Campesinos! on tour: Gareth's diary
Los Campesinos! are a band. A band that formed in Cardiff. A band that formed to take their music out to the people. And the people, they came out to see Los Campesinos!, and how they danced. And partied. And threw knives. The septet has been making mainstream progress all year with a series of much-admired singles showcasing their pretty-ruddy-mint jangle-pop shenanigans. Signed to Wichita in the UK, and Arts & Crafts across the pond, their debut album is due out next year. One-of-seven Gareth Campesinos! (vocals, keyboard, glockenspiel) took the time to put pen to paper – or, rather, finger to keys – while on a recent UK tour. Here, we present his summary of a trip from Lancaster to Exeter, via a few grimy venues, bowling alleys and Tesco Metros. - - - October 6, 2007: Lancaster In a Library.
Richmond man may face life on enhanced felony
A 23-year-old Richmond man was indicted Thursday by a Madison County grand jury on charges that, if convicted, could mean the possibility of life in prison.Johnny C. Ellington was indicted for first-degree burglary for allegedly breaking into a residence on Race Street in December. The suspect showed up at the home in an attempt to find a woman he had previously dated, however, when the woman's mother, Brenda Riddell, told him she was not there, Ellington got upset, said Sgt. Willard Reardon of the Richmond Police Department."Mrs. Riddell wouldn't open the door and he kicked it and forced his way in," he said. "Once he got inside, he said he was looking for (Riddell's daughter) and he pulled this knife. She described it as a hunting knife.""She called 911, but he left the area before police arrived," Reardon said.
Utah County senator an unstoppable force
On an abandoned Senate floor, after a long day of debates has soaked into the stolid granite walls and her colleagues have left the Hill, Margaret Dayton is hunched over her desk. Speaking quietly into a Blackberry with a constituent, the Orem Republican is also printing out e-mails, mostly about immigration, for review. Dayton is considered one of the hardest working members of the Senate. But she is also raising eyebrows among her fellow senators, and the public, for her comments and stances during the 2008 legislative session, her second in the Senate. Whether bemoaning racial discrimination against white, Christian men or railing against the anti-Americanism of the United Nations that she says is taught in advanced high school classes, Dayton's head remains unbowed.
